St. Catherine of Bologna and Feast Days

Last week was May 9th.  May 9th is not St. Catherine of Bologna's feast day.  (Her feast day is March 9th).

Why do I mention that?  Well, some Poor Clare Nuns tried telling me that her feast day was May 9th.  Now, I am not saying that those nuns are wrong.  Trust me, I would never try to disclaim a Poor Clare.

First, a little on St. Catherine of Bologna:  The Patroness of Artists, she was a Poor Clare famous for her skills in painting statues and writing books.  She eventually became abbess and helped expand the congregation.  Read more about her: https://w2.vatican.va/content/benedict-xvi/en/audiences/2010/documents/hf_ben-xvi_aud_20101229.html

The Poor Clares are a cloistered (enclosed) religious order, so they never leave their convent.  And they celebrate the liturgical seasons very seriously, for example, Lent.  March 9th, almost every single year, falls in Lent.  So (and this is not the only case of this) the Poor Clares moved the feast day of their beloved So it would not be in Lent.

As annoying as this is for the Saint cataloger, it makes sense.  Feast days are to be a celebration of a life of a holy person.  It's like a birthday but better, because it is the honor of someone's birthday into heaven.  So a pretty beg party will happen.  Lent is a solemn time for fasting and prayer, and a crazy celebration might not fit into this time.  Every Saint should be fully celebrated for who they are, and not have to compete with another season.

This fact shows how important feast days are and why we should truly celebrate them.  Because we need to celebrate the people who are role models for us in our relationship with Christ.  So now that it is the Easter Season, let's celebrate!!!!
